There has been a global rise in cases of diabetes, hypertension and other metabolic disorders because of change in environment and lifestyle. These diseases are silent to start with and come to surface at a later stage mostly with a complication. They affect the brain, arms, lungs, legs, small and large blood vessels. They become evident in the age group of 40 and 50.

Every month 50 patients are seen by Dr.Rajiv Parakh & his Department of Vascular Surgery at SGRH who have already developed the disease of their limbs due to lack of awareness. If these patients were referred before the disease even set in, the outcome may not have been so drastic (amputation). It is with a view to improve miserable state of the disease that Dr.Parakh set up an NGO, Delhi Vascular Foundation Trust to create an awareness regarding Peripheral blood vessel diseases which can cause permanent disability like amputation & stroke.

Report of Peripheral Vascular Disease Camp

Peripheral Vascular diseases camp has been organized on 16/03/07 in R&D Conference hall by Medical Cell Noida in association with Vascular foundation trust New Delhi & Sir Ganga Ram Hospital New Delhi.

Dr Subhash Chandra (CMO CC), Dr P.C. Rai (CMO EOC), and all the doctors from medical cell Noida were present at the occasion.

Dr Rajeev Parakh Sr Vascular Surgeon spoke about prevention of peripheral Vascular diseases and effect of Diabetes, Dyslipidemia, Hypertension Smoking, Sedentary life style etc. and their management. Dr Anjali Arora from SGR Hospital apprised the audience about importance of life style modification in controlling lipids in body and in prevention of cardiovascular diseases.

41 Patients had undergone ABI (Ankle Brachial Index) test, out of which two were found positive and recommended for further management.

GENERAL INFORMATION REGARDING PERIPHERAL VASCULAR DISEASES (NON-CARDIAC BLOOD VESSELS).

The number of people suffering from vascular diseases in India is high. Most people do not know that the disease that causes heart attacks can also occur in the Legs (leg attack or gangrene) and in the brain (Brain attack or stroke) and should be dealt with immediately, with extreme urgency to prevent amputation or a full stroke.

People, who smoke, have raised blood pressure or are diabetic, are particularly at risk of developing these diseases. This can also run in families. The basic problem is a progressive narrowing of the blood vessels (arteries) due to deposition of fatty materials (cholesterol) in its wall. This results in a reduced blood supply to the different organs (brain, heart and legs).

The symptoms of a Leg Attack include, pain in calf and thigh muscles on walking which typically subsides on stopping only to come back when one starts walking again, Non-healing painful ulcers on the foot and blackening of toes or gangrene. These changes could lead to amputation of limb.

The symptoms of a Brain Attack include painless loss of vision in one eye that recovers in a few minutes. Weakness of a limb or half side of the body which recovers partially or wholly within minutes or hours. Tingling and numbness in the fingers or one of the hands, may also be symptom. The most extreme situation is a complete and unrecoverable loss of function and our attempts are to prevent this disability from occurring in patients, who may have the initial warning symptoms.

Awareness regarding the Preventive aspects of Peripheral Vascular Disease can prevent or reduce the unfortunate outcome of the disease.
